Rael Artel announced as the first Estonian curator-in-residence of ISCP New York
The Estonian Contemporary Art Development Center (ECADC) is pleased to announce the results of the 2016 open call for the International Studio and Curatorial Program (ISCP) curator’s residency in New York. An international jury consisting of Kari Conte (ISCP), Jessamyn Fiore (Jean-Paul Najar Foundation for Contemporary Art), Luigi Fassi (Steirischer Herbst), Niels Van Tomme (Bucharest Biennale), and Karin Laansoo (ECADC) has awarded the grant to Rael Artel, Director of Tartu Art Museum.
The international jury agreed to award the grant to Rael Artel, an experienced curator with solid international background. The jury especially emphasized Rael Artel’s work in repositioning Tartu Art Museum in the contemporary art field in Estonia by bringing forth a world-class program. Artel’s residency involves curatorial and research-based activities, meetings with art institutions, and participation in the annual ISCP Open Studios in November.
Highly regarded as a residency program, ISCP supports the creative development of artists and curators, and promotes exchange through residencies and public programs. ISCP has hosted more that 1900 residents from over 62 countries, including such well-known names as Miguel Amando, who curated the Portugese Pavilion at the 55th La Biennale di Venezia in 2013, and Randi Grov Berger, who co-ordinated Norwegian Pavillion “Without Walls” for Performa 13 in New York. Founded in 1994 and housed in a former factory in Brooklyn, with 35 light-filled work studios, two galleries, and a project space, ISCP is New York’s most comprehensive international visual arts residency program.
The ISCP-ECADC residency is generously supported by Estonian Contemporary Art Development Center and the Ministry of Culture, Estonia.
