Karel Koplimets Receives ISCP Studio Grant in New York

The Estonian Contemporary Art Development Center (ECADC) is pleased to announce the results of the 2024 open call for the International Studio and Curatorial Program (ISCP) two-month artist’s residency in New York. An international jury consisting of Sara Garzón (Canal Projects), Kari Conte (ISCP), and Karin Laansoo (Kai/ECADC) has awarded the grant to Karel Koplimets.
The jury valued Karel Koplimets’ strong portfolio and his recent exhibitions. The jury particularly highlighted the artist’s experimentation with new sculptural forms and technical solutions, as well as his exploratory approach in addressing social themes. The ISCP residency will allow the artist to take time to analyze his previous work and to develop new ideas, as well as visit various art institutions in New York. Koplimets will introduce and present his practice during the annual ISCP Open Studio event in November.
Karel Koplimets (1986) is a photo, video, and installation artist based in Tallinn. He studied photography at the Estonian Academy of Arts (2013) and from 2020 to 2021 he participated in the post-academic course at HISK (Hoger Instituut voor Schone Kunstnen) in Belgium. Recent exhibitions include Coup de Ville (Sint-Niklaas, Belgium, 2024), biennial Videobrasil (Sesc 24 de Maio, Brazil, 2023), main exhibition of Tallinn Photomonth Trance (Tallinn Art Hall, Estonia 2023), and solo show One Is the Loneliest Number in (AV17) Gallery (Lithuania, 2022). His works are included in various collections, including the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma (Finland), Musée de l’Elysée (Switzerland), and Kumu Art Museum (Estonia). He has also received the Estonian Artist Laureate Salary (2020-2022).
The international Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP) supports the creative development of artists and curators, and promotes exchange through residencies and public programs. ISCP is housed in a former factory building in Brooklyn; it has 35 studios, 2 galleries, and a project space. Since 2015, Marge Monko, Rael Artel, Paul Kuimet, Anu Vahtra, Laura Põld, Mia Raadik, Taavi Suisalu, and Helena Keskküla have taken part in the ISCP residency.
The ISCP-ECADC residency takes place between October 1st and November 30th, 2024. The stipend is supported by the Estonian Contemporary Art Development Center and the Estonian Ministry of Culture.
