Launch of the ECADC in New York
On Thursday, May 3rd, 2012 the newly-established Estonian Contemporary Art Development Center (ECADC) will celebrate its launch along with a presentation of Sigrid Viir’s new book. Estonian Minister of Culture, Mr. Rein Lang, will be present in New York for the event. The ECADC plans to be a flexible platform for helping to create direct contacts and further the international potential of Estonian contemporary art. Although the physical location of the center is in Tallinn, its first presentation has been timed in sync with two contemporary art fairs taking place in New York – PULSE and Frieze. During the first week of May, over 200 leading galleries and art organizations converge in the city. Estonian gallery Temnikova & Kasela is also participating in the PULSE Contemporary Art Fair for the first time.
With support from Enterprise Estonia and grants from the European Regional Development Fund, the main goal of the ECADC is to increase the export of Estonian art and the competitiveness of Estonian galleries. As part of the center’s activities, producers, gallerists, and project managers will be trained. The ECADC will be managed by Karin Laansoo, who has been working in New York for the last five years as a gallery manager and director of an international artist residency.
Estonian Minister of Culture Mr. Rein Lang considers art export very important: “Estonian artists have a lot to learn about how to present themselves to the world. As Minister I wish to contribute positively to this difficult process by helping to open doors that will open more easily for me.” Minister Lang has several meetings in New York with various institutional leaders to discuss potential collaborations.
