Gallerist Master Course 2018

This fall the Estonian Contemporary Art Development Center (ECADC) is presenting the fourth edition of its Gallerist Master Course in Tallinn, Estonia, offering training for both practicing and emerging gallerists. The course is designed to give the students insights into the dynamics of art world infrastructure.
Under the guidance of John Riepenhoff (The Green Gallery, Milwaukee), Hanna Laura Kaljo (independent curator, London), and Mathieu Borysevicz (BANK/MABSOCIETY, Shanghai), course participants will learn about various artist representation and gallery models, how to commission and develop projects with emerging and established artists, and get an in-depth insight to the contemporary Chinese art scene.
This six-day intensive course will accept MA students with a demonstrated interest and/or experience in contemporary art, as well as practicing gallerists, arts and culture managers, and artists.
The entire course will be conducted in English.

How to Make a Green Gallery

Established in 2003, The Green Gallery is a contemporary art gallery in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with a special focus on representing conceptual art. The seminar will take the form of a case study on how to develop a sustainable gallery model and look at art world canons as potential tools for cultural expression and criticism.

Introduction to Contemporary Curatorial Practices

The seminar will consider concepts of collaboration, intimacy, care and sustainability in relation to contemporary curatorial practice and discuss the value of small-scale art organisations in supporting the very first, fragile stages of artistic ideas. We will unpack what constitutes research-led curatorial work and explore what might be the tools and responsibilities of the practice in the context of today’s global art economy.

China, Glocalization and the challenge to be non-conventional

This seminar will address the momentous changes in China’s contemporary art industry over the past two decades with a particular focus on the last five years, which has seen the explicit foregrounding of an international market. The course will also examine global shifts in the industry through a narration of BANK’s idiosyncratic journey from ‘curatorial studio’ to conventional gallery model. A group discussion/workshop will also imagine how 21st economic models may be employed in the expansion of art’s role in shaping contemporary culture and consumption trends.

Tuition: Full program € 350 / Single module €125
Participants will be responsible for their round-trip transport to and from Tallinn, accommodation, and living expenses during their stay.

Faculty
John Riepenhoff is an artist, curator and co-owner of The Green Gallery, a contemporary art gallery in Milwaukee, USA. John Riepenhoff was born in 1982 in Milwaukee where he lives and received a BFA from the Peck School of the Arts at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee. Riepenhoff is also a co-organizer of Milwaukee International and Dark Fairs, is an inventor of artistic platforms for the expression of others and regular food ideator. His recent exhibitions and curatorial projects have been presented in New York, London and all around the States. He also continues a program of the John Riepenhoff Experience at various locations around the world, most recently at Night Gallery, Los Angeles, CA and Misako and Rosen, Tokyo.
Hanna Laura Kaljo is an Estonian curator based in London. She holds an MFA in Curating from Goldsmiths College. With an interdisciplinary approach to methodology, she investigates how mind, body and environment intersect. She is interested in how artistic practices fathom the global ecological crisis and imagine alternative narratives that cultivate personal and ecological wellbeing. Between 2014-18, she was Co-Director at the curatorial studio Jupiter Woods, where she produced numerous exhibitions, discursive events, residencies and off-site projects. Currently, she is collaborating with Northern Sustainable Futures, a centre for art and culture in Swedish Lapland. Previous seminars include: Techniques to make you doubt, Fluent, 2016; Curatorial Herstories, Goldsmiths College, 2016; Care, Critique, Self-Organisation, University of the Arts Helsinki, 2016.
Mathieu Borysevicz is an artist, author, curator and founder of BANK/MABSOCIETY based in Shanghai. Formerly international editor of ART FORUM in Shanghai, his writings have also appeared in many publications including his award winning books, Learning from Hangzhou and The Book about Xu Bing’s Book from the Ground. Prior to founding BANK (2013) he served as director of the Shanghai Gallery of Art where he brought international superstars such as Paul McCarthy, Mika Rottenberg, Ryan Trecartin, and many others to China for the first time.

The Estonian Contemporary Art Development Center (ECADC) is a non-profit foundation focused both on fostering international exposure for artists from Estonia and on developing the contemporary art scene in Estonia. Functioning as an umbrella organization for Estonian partner institutions, the center is creating strategic international partnerships in the field of contemporary art. ECADC is supported by Enterprise Estonia from the European Regional Development Fund and its team members are based in New York and Tallinn, Estonia.
