This fall the Estonian Contemporary Art Development Center (ECADC) is presenting the third edition of its Gallerist Master Course in Tallinn, Estonia, offering training for both practicing and emerging gallerists. The course is designed to introduce students to the dynamics of the art world infrastructure. Classes will discuss the various segments of today’s global art market (Alessia Zorloni, IULM); representation and the day-to-day operations of a commercial gallery (Sol Pochat, HILO Gallery); art journalism and writing for social media (Andrew M. Goldstein, Artspace, Phaidon); as well as more recent developments in exhibition-making and curating (Fatos Üstek, independent curator, fig2).

 

This eight-day intensive course will accept MA students with a demonstrated interest and/or experience in contemporary art as well as practicing gallerists, arts and culture managers, and artists. The entire course will be conducted in English.

Case Study of HILO Galeria

Established in 2015, HILO Galeria is an emerging gallery in Buenos Aires, Argentina, with a special focus on site- and context-specific artistic and curatorial practices. The seminar will take the form of a case study on how to develop a sustainable gallery model for representing emerging artists.

Introduction to the International Art Market

The art market, like most major business sectors in the 21st century, operates in a global environment and is complex, dynamic, and often seemingly irrational. This seminar will give students an understanding of the various segments of today’s ever-evolving international art market.

Introduction to Contemporary Curatorial Practices

The seminar will address curatorial positions and the significant role they play in today’s arts ecology. Visiting a plethora of voices that are shaping the practice of contemporary curating, it will concentrate on different modalities and sensitivities that a curator employs in order to engage with art, and, more significantly, to make art public.

How to Write About Art (and Actually Get People to Read It)

Beginning with the polemicists and publications of the postwar era and going through the rise of the October magazine style to today’s proliferation of TMZ-like art sites, the seminar will take the form of a discussion on how art writing has dramatically changed over the past 70-odd years.

 

 

Location: Estonian Academy of Arts, Institute of Art History and Visual Culture (Suur Kloostri 11, Tallinn)

 

Tuition: Full program € 500 / Single module €125

Participants will be responsible for their round-trip transport to and from Tallinn, accommodation, and living expenses during their stay.

Faculty

 

Sol Pochat is an artist and curator. She is the founder of HILO, a contemporary art gallery in Buenos Aires, Argentine, focusing on site-specific and -responsive contemporary art. Sol received her BA in Fine Arts from School of Visuals Arts (SVA) in New York City, and shortly after graduation started working for a private collector in Bogota, Colombia, while also pursuing her own artistic practice. A few years later, she returned to Argentine to serve as a co-director for ConectArte, an organisation dedicated to commissioning contemporary art. Since the opening of HILO in 2015, Sol has been engaged in helping artists produce on-site commissions, while also developing her own aesthetic language as an artist.

 
Alessia Zorloni is a cultural economist and consultant specializing in the art markets. She serves as an Adjunct Professor at IULM University as well as Catholic University, Milan, Italy, and also an Associate Researcher at the Boston Consulting Group. Prior to joining BCG, Alessia worked at the Wien Kunsthalle, and has also been a visiting scholar at the Tate Modern, Guggenheim Foundation, and the Smithsonian Institution, where she has been awarded the Smithsonian Fellowship in Museum Practice. Alessia holds a PhD in Communication Economics from IULM University, and an MA in Arts Management from City, University of London. She has published extensively on art investments and philanthropy, and is currently working on her upcoming book on the administration of private collections of contemporary art.

 

Fatoş Üstek is an independent curator and writer from Istanbul, Turkey. She currently acts as Art Fund curator at fig-2, editing a publication for the project fig-2, 50 exhibitions in 50 weeks that she curated throughout 2015 at the ICA Studio, London. Formerly, Üstek has acted as an Associate Curator for the 10th Gwangju Biennale, South Korea, under the artistic direction of Jessica Morgan. Üstek is a member of AICA UK, and a regular contributor to international art magazines and exhibition catalogues. She has curated An Opera in Five Acts, DRAF, London; an exhibition trilogy titled Now Expanded, Kunstfabrik, Berlin; Tent, Rotterdam; and DRAF, London; including various group shows in Europe, Far East, and Western Asia, Turkey.

 

Andrew M. Goldstein is the Editor-In-Chief of Artspace, an e-commerce site offering information and purchasing access for contemporary art. Goldstein joined the company in 2012, after spending a decade as a journalist covering crime, politics, music, and pop culture for a number of highly recognizable publications, such as The New York Times, Spin, and Rolling Stone. He has also written on the arts for Portfolio, Modern Painters, and the New York Observer, among others. Prior to joining Artspace, Andrew was the executive editor of Artinfo, where over two years he nearly quadrupled the site’s traffic, turning it into the most most widely read online art publication.

The Estonian Contemporary Art Development Center (ECADC) is a nonprofit foundation focused both on fostering international exposure for artists from Estonia and on developing the contemporary art scene in Estonia.  Functioning as an umbrella organization for Estonian partner institutions, the center is creating strategic international partnerships in the field of contemporary art.  ECADC is supported by Enterprise Estonia from the European Regional Development Fund and its team members are based in New York and Tallinn, Estonia.
